A defining character of any great city is a sense of scale, as reflected in the social, cultural and architectural landscapes, and when it comes to Mexico City, few can match it in any of these determinants. Certainly amongst the largest and most populated cities on the planet, it also boasts one of the largest city squares, city parks, and a cultural and historic influence which extends way beyond its sprawling boundaries. There is much to do and see in the city and never enough time in a single visit to do more than scratch the surface, but for those keen to try, any one of the Mexico City hotels provides the ideal start point.

With a population in excess of 20 million, spread over 250 neighborhoods, and a decentralized cityscape displaying an eclectic mix of architecture throughout it can be quite daunting deciding on the best plan of attack for getting the most out of a city stay. In this respect forewarned is forearmed and it is better to think of the city in terms of its larger districts, some of which were former historic towns now incorporated into the city and which contain many of the most popular sights, activities and attractions.

The old town of Coyoacan lies in the south west area of the city. One time home to Diego Riviera and Leon Trotsky, it has retained much of its cultural heritage and bohemian characteristics and still attracts today the counter cultural elements, intellectuals and students. The southern city district of San Angel is a further old town, noted for its bustling markets, and nearby Tlalpan is noted in particular for its charming historic downtown area. Most visitors keen to explore the rich cultural history of the city will however start in the Centro Historico of the city proper. This is where to find the Zocalo, a huge city square and many other famous historic sights and buildings, including the Aztec Temple Mayor.

Those following the Aztec trail will undoubtedly take in Xochimilco, famed for the ancient Aztec irrigation canals and similarly ancient cultural traditions. For others it is perhaps the shopping and the nightlife which forms the basis for a stay and there are ample opportunities to enjoy both. The nightlife in Mexico City is legendary, and like everything else in the city, an eclectic experience. There are modern lounges, bars and clubs, particularly within the districts of Santa Fe and Reforma to the classic old dance halls of the Roma and Centro districts. In between there is everything else, from the gay scene of Zona Rosa to to the upscale bars, restaurants and nightclubs of Polanco.

As might be expected, Mexico City is a very busy place but there are ways to find some family-oriented activities and some peace and quite too. Chapultepec is a city park, one of the largest in the world and is where to find the city zoo, as well as a castle, amusement park, lakes and museums. The castle, now a museum, was once home to the Spanish Viceroys and the Chapultepec area is a significant historic and cultural heart of the city, noted today for its grand mansions as well as the park.

There are many truly grand buildings in the city, and some of them host the finest Mexico City hotels. Other more modern hotels may be preferred for those in the city on business, while for leisure travelers the sky is the limit. Indulge in five star luxury or experience the vibe of the city streets from any number of comfortable budget hotel options, any one of which will provide a gateway into an unforgettable city break.
